"Varia Metal" is an arcade game that combines elements of classic shoot 'em up and platformer genres, offering players a thrilling and intense gaming experience. It was developed by New Way Trading and released in Japan 1995. The storyline revolves around a duo of pilots dispatched to thwart the villainous Lindwurm, who's been wreaking havoc on the fabled city of Atlantis. It's a conventional shooter narrative, tasking players with annihilating waves of adversaries descending from the screen's top, all while snatching power-ups to extend their survival. Players assume the role of the pilot tasked with navigating through a series of levels filled with waves of enemies and hazards. The game features responsive controls that allow players to maneuver their character with precision as they dodge incoming projectiles and engage enemies in fierce combat. Your ship offers two selectable modes, each altering the primary weapon and function of the orbiting power satellites. The spread-shot of the primary mode typically outmatches the bouncing rings of the second though. Additionally, aside from activating a barrier shield, there's not much reason to switch modes. Even then, activating the barrier confines you to the secondary ship mode until its expiration, and utilizing special attacks depletes one of the satellites. "Varia Metal" can merely be classified as a serviceable shoot 'em up. Its primary offense lies in its lackluster engagement, with adversaries posing minimal threat and several features failing to catch on or end up being redundant. The game's visual presentation is great though, featuring vibrant and detailed pixel art graphics that bring the game to life. It's a an enjoyable shooter for a playthrough, but will soon fade into obscurity afterwards.
