Today’s feature is the story of how you can have everything needed to become a special basketball player, except a few just as important elements like timing and opportunity to see that potential fulfilled. At 6’11 220lbs with guard skills and shooting ability, everyone expected Donte’s ceiling to replicate that of possibly Kevin Durant. Of course not as gifted as one of the best ever, but the potential to wind up a lessor version of that, that would still at least have been an NBA all star and 10 plus solid years in the league. Instead Greene never really came close to those projections on the court at just 6 points and 2 rebounds a game for his career. A career that only lasted the 4 year length of his rookie first round contract. Before that, Greene was a part of the illustrious 2008 high school class that included 2 future NBA mvps in James Harden and Derrick Rose, along with Michael Beasley, Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, and OJ Mayo. He was ranked higher than Harden and Blake Griffin as the #2 small forward in the country. As a college freshman at Syracuse, Greene looked poised and ready to take on those potential NBA star comparisons, as he came in and immediately led the program in scoring, becoming the first freshman to do so since Carmelo Anthony. At 6’11 he also set a freshman record for the program in 3pts made in a season at 90, passing Syracuse great Gerry McNamara and Syracuse legend Carmelo Anthony. At this point I remember the future for Greene seeming so bright. To me he was a clear cut 1 and done prospect and would easily become a top 10 pick and talent from the 2008 draft class. While many of those names from the many all American games in his high school class went on to have all star and some Hall Of Fame careers, Greene is usually the forgotten player that was right in the middle of the pack as ammeters.
