Reindeer Rangifer tarandus (LINNAEUS, 1758) Северный олень We are in the polar region in the utmost north of Eurasia. Here, among the endless earth faults featuring hundreds of lakes and waterfalls with crystal-clear water, lies the Putorana reserve. One of the missions of the reserve is to preserve this pristine and unspoilt part of our planet. Like thousands of years ago, nature on the Putorana plateau continues its primeval existence, occasionally allowing human beings to take a brief peek into this amazing world. This deserted vastness of the Arctic is home to the world’s largest population of reindeer. Both males and females have antlers, which is a unique feature of this particular species. The females’ antlers are smaller and thinner than those of males. Adult males shed their antlers in December, when the mating season ends. Young animals do this in April, while females do this in June, after giving birth to their calves. The area around the Putorana plateau is where these extraordinary and surprisingly tough animals spend the harsh polar winter. The reindeer have split into small groups and are trying to dig out their feed from under the snow. They hardly move around, trying to save precious energy in an effort to survive until spring. Every spring before the icy crust melts these majestic animals embark on a long journey, fraught with danger. Reindeer are on the move day and night, despite the rain and cold. They press on, just like their ancestors did, on the everlasting journey through space and time. The reindeer which have spent the winter on Putorana plateau move towards Taymir peninsula, the most northern point of the continent of Eurasia. During a short Polar summer, which only lasts a few months, Taymir tundra turns into boundless lush pastures. The procreation instinct is as strong a factor as searching for food is when it comes to reasons for starting their dangerous quest. While this ancient migration is on, we have the pleasure of watching these magnificent strong animals. Thanks to Vasiliy Sarana’s outstanding camera skills, we will see how the world’s most large-scale wild reindeer migration begins. It is the beginning of April. The most impatient animals are already attempting to break through the silent snow-covered mountains, although the bulk of the animals are still staying near the lakes. Young reindeer and pregnant females are the first ones to get on the move. These females are easy to identify by their antlers. The rest of the deer have long shed theirs. After a while, the rest of the reindeer follow the pregnant females on the way north. The males have already started growing new antlers, which are so tender that they may bleed from almost any touch. The reindeer make brief stopovers in places with little snow in order to regain strength and feed on dry grass. By naturalists’ estimates, the reindeer cover more than two thousand kilometres during a seasonal migration. By doing this they solve their main issue of finding food. Staying in one area all the time would be impossible as the scarce food supplies would not be able to sustain them all. 2018 year. Russia. Putorana plateau. Putorana reserve. Ayan lake district. Putorana plateau is a rugged mountain range located in the north-western part of the Middle Siberian highlands. The plateau area is 250 thousand square kilometers, roughly the area of the UK. Putorana state nature reserve occupies a part of the plateau. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Putorana, also known as the Putorana Plateau, is one of the most uninhabited places on the planet. Seeing these majestic natural places with your own eyes is only possible from a helicopter. Putorana state natural reserve was created in 1988 in order to preserve this pristine natural environment. The video was shot by Vasiliy Sarana, a well-known wildlife cameraman and staff member of Putorana reserve. Vasiliy lives and works near ‘Severny Ayan’ boundary of Putorana reserve. Заполярье, самый север Евразии.Здесь среди безлюдных просторов Арктики обитает самая большая в мире популяция дикого северного оленя.
