Today we are out checking the trail condition of Cutter's Run, a blue trail at the Mount Morgan MTB Trails. I'm riding my 2023 Polygon Siskiu T7E. -------------------------------------- This is the end of Gangalu trail, at the base of Cutter’s Run. It’s part of a mountain bike network in Mount Morgan, about 30 minutes southeast of Rockhampton. The trails were opened in December 2020 by Rockhampton Regional Council in an effort to boost tourism to the town. Up to that point in time, everything is all well and good. The opening day was successful. I promoted it heavily in the Facebook groups and we had over 60 people turn up on the first day. For a few months the trails were well frequented, but soon they began to get overgrown. As one of the initial architects of lobbying for the construction of the trails in the first place, I don’t want to see the trails lost to nature. At 25 kilometres long, it’s a brilliant piece of infrastructure for a town of 3000 people. So, this is what we’re looking at today. How have the trails held up without TLC? And are they salvageable? I mean, it’s only been two and a half years. Finally, if they can be saved, and if Rockhampton Regional Council is still struggling to manage them, will it allow me to try to organise a volunteer group to take over maintaining and promoting the trails. We rode the whole trail park today, but my focus for this video is this one, Cutter’s Run. As suspected, it was in the worst condition. This is due to its exposed rocky landscape as opposed to other sections of the park which enjoy a thick bushland canopy. Also, because of its long and janky climb, Cutter’s Run is probably the least ridden. I doubt anyone has ridden this trail in over a year. This was built as a blue trail, using a lot of natural rock formations, and also some pretty cool features. That said, and while this particular trail was designed and constructed by a proper bike trailer builder, I do remember having early reservations about drainage and erosion. We’ve had a few decent rain events in the last two years, as evidenced by increased water levels in the dam, so it will be interesting to see what’s held up and what’s been washed away. At time of recording, I have had preliminary conversations with the local councillor and am hoping to have a meeting with their parks department in the coming week or two. I’m confident that between Council and the community, we can get these trails back on their feet again and save this important piece of community infrastructure.
