In the Supreme Court today, Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of Ladakh climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, argued that her husband’s detention under the National Security Act is not about public order or security — but a deliberate move to silence a respected voice of dissent. Wangchuk was detained after the September protests in Leh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. Angmo has now sought to amend her petition, saying the grounds of detention recently shared with Wangchuk expose deeper flaws in the case. The Supreme Court Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria allowed her to update the plea and directed the Union government to respond to the new points. The Court has asked for all filings to be completed in the next few weeks and will take up the matter again on November 24. Previously on October 15, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had defended the Centre asserting that Sonam Wangchuk’s detention under the NSA followed due process and his legal rights were not violated.
