Mining has always helped pave the way for the ever-increasing necessity of human beings for better products and improved ways of life. With environmental impacts that have been of concern for several years now, the mining industry and communities around the world are trying to include their practices into the circular economy concept. With more than 100 billion tons a year entering the global economy, actions need to be taken in order to close the gap and create change towards a more sustainable future. Jose R. Velasquez is a Master's student in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. His background is in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. His previous research focused on Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) developing an institutional framework to understand sustainable development in formalization processes. During this time, Jose also co-developed an educational outreach program to work with local elementary students regarding mining perception. His current research focuses on finding engineering-based alternatives that help mining communities to develop substitute economies from the recycling of mine tailings and their impacts on health and the environment. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
