The Concerto Diary - 4th Entries – Piano Concerto Study N°2 After having finished the orchestration of the third movement of this Piano Concerto in F (see previous post), I get started with the composition of the second movement, which in my mind, should be a moment of pure grace. As I did with the third movement, I initially worked on a piano study. Among all the musical ideas which come up during the composition process, many of them end up discarded, as they’re not brilliant or accurate enough, or too much off topic . Still, some are actually quite good, but there’s not enough place left to integrate them in the final piece. I send all these forsaken ideas at the same place, which I call affectuously « the trash can » ^^ Yet, It is rather somekind of a storage, as many of these ideas are actually usable matter for new compositions. They are seeds or cuttings rather than rubbish. Thus, I often take a tour into this trash can to see what discarded element would worth to be used as a starter for a new piece. ♪♫ However, I didn’t use any seed from my trash can this time... It is rather somekind of a cutting, which I took from the very first measure of Mozart’s Adagio of his 23rd Piano Concerto, to grow a new tree of my own from it. Doing so, I attempted to give my Piano Concerto some Mozartian essence, in its very genes, from its very start. From these few notes, I quickly built a theme, and from this theme, new ideas unfolded rapidly, as if they were already there, contained in those first few notes. ♪♫ I composed this piece from the begining until the end, quite sure that it would do a very decent second movement for my Piano Concerto. Some parts are even hardly playable by a single piano, as I was already exploring new voices, to be held by the orchestra. But despite the fact that this piece sounded good, I quickly concluded that it wouldn’t do it, as a second movement. Quite good, but not enough for the pièce de résistance of this concerto… Something was missing somewhere. So I started to work on a little theme to be added to this piece. ♪♫ Of course, the piece was already finished, and too tightly structured to allow any new idea to be properly integrated to it. But nonetheless, this little theme I worked on quickly grown up and revealed to be THE idea. Remembering that I had to start all over a new third movement for this concerto (see previous articles), to get the real final thing, I decided to do the same with the second movement, and I completely start a new piece from this little theme. I’ve could never been happier with what came up then… But let’s save this new piece and actual second movement of this Piano Concerto in F for the next article of this series. ♪♫ The real lesson there is that, take all the time you need, but don’t quit searching before you find the very best idea ever, from which to build your entire piece. A good idea can be developped and make an incredible piece, but an incredible idea will unfold into something even more bigger. So, better than searching for a good seed in my trash can, I learned that the best ideas, the jewels are hidden somewhere, deep into my heart and soul. And if you have hard time finding it, Mozart will always enlight the way ^^ Greg
