Back to where it all began... well, kinda! The Round1 Bowling & Amusement out on Long Island was my first ever experience with them; I visited there about 8 years ago and was blown away at the time, since I didn't really have much experience with the Japanese chain's style of arcades. Two full floors of music games, claw machines, redemption games, imported sit-down cabinet rarities, bowling lanes, karaoke rooms, and so much more. Since I moved out of Queens to the pastures of New Jersey, though, I haven't been back to this particular location as frequently as others. I recently got a chance to revisit it (and this time, I wasn't being hassled by the mall's overzealous elderly security guard, which is always a plus!). While a lot has changed over the past eight years, many things still stay the same. The music game selection has rotated out some older titles; no more Museca, Groove Coaster, Music Gun Gun, or Project Diva, but now there are brand new Gitadora cabinets as well as five separate arrow-stomping machines -- three DDRs, a Pump It Up, AND a StepManiaX. The claw machines have grown exponentially, and there are a bunch of new redemption games and coin pushers, including one that I'm seeing for the first time today, the baseball-themed Power Pros: Batter Up!!, which is half coin pusher, and half pitch-and-bat. It was surprisingly addictive. The sitdown cabinets, meanwhile, have shrunk considerably; just three Street Fighter 6 Type Arcade machines upstairs near the elevator, and four downstairs near the bowling alley (half of which were out of order). They still have a bunch of pinball machines downstairs, not surprising considering they're an official Stern Army location, but there's nothing newer than The Mandalorian or Godzilla, which are both four years old at this point. Would love to see them get some newer Stern games in like Jaws, King Kong, or Metallica Remastered, or maybe even branch out and pick up some games from the likes of Jersey Jack, Barrels of Fun, or Spooky. Overall, though, it's still a really fun place to spend a few hours playing a huge variety of different games. Is it my favorite R1? It's hard to give the edge to any location that doesn't have a Spo-Cha in it, but this one definitely comes close.
