This Ashtapadi from Jayadeva’s Geet-Govind, tells the story of a sakhi who endeavors to bring Radha and Krishna together. She says to Radha, “Madhava waits for you, Do not sit idle and reluctant dear friend, Make haste and go to Him.” She describes to Radha, the state that Krishna is in, as he sits on the banks of Yamuna, calling her name on his flute, anguished by the separation. This Ashtapadi is a beautiful insight into the love that Krishna’s gopis have for him. Krishna’s dallying with these gopis makes Radha burn with jealousy, yet it is the gopi who then brings Radha and Krishna back together. These emotions between the triangle of Krishna, Radha and her sakhi, transcend mundane worldly emotions of love, passion, and petty jealousy, and to understand the essence of these Ashtapadis, we need to look beyond the simple human emotions of our own existence. Choreography: Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Composition: Pt Bhubaneswar Mishra Raag: Yaman, Taal: Ektali Dance: Namrata Mehta Video Editing: Shri Girish Nambiar Dance in Solitude... beyond the stage series is my effort to make an archival memory of my time spent in lockdown on learning, revising, polishing and also teaching few of the old and new choreographies by Masters. Time has been a gift in this lockdown and my way of making the most of it is by working on every aspect of these choreographies once again. I am very happy to share this series of Dance in Solitude.... beyond stage, with all you art lovers and connoisseurs. Watch out for more videos in this series.
