This year’s mountain goat opener is here — and I’ve finally forced myself to film a full alpine pack dump the day before the hunt. Last year my pack tipped the scales at 83 lbs. This year? I’ve shaved it down to just 53 lbs without sacrificing the gear I need to hunt hard in the high country. In this video, I break down every single piece of gear I’m carrying — rifle, optics, sleep system, stove, camera gear, clothing, and food — along with my strategy for only bringing 4 days of food into goat country. I’ll also share why lighter isn’t just more comfortable, but can mean more miles, more opportunities, and better hunting. If you’re a backpack hunter chasing goats, sheep, or mule deer in rugged alpine terrain, this video is packed with real-world weight-saving tips and proven backcountry gear choices.
