Brooklyn, NY is one of the most diverse places on the planet – and when it comes to mental health, diverse communities come with a diverse set of needs that need to be met to enable everyone to thrive. Maimonides Health is committed to serving this community and enhancing patients’ emotional, physical, and mental well-being. Founded in 1968, Maimonides Health was the first community health center in New York, and the third in the USA. Now serving a population of more than 1 million people across two hospitals, the Department of Psychiatry is committed to meeting the needs of this community, combining both high quality care and excellent research to do so. The team is providing a broad range of care at all levels, from ambulatory to acute care, and services that cover individual, group, and family therapies, crisis intervention, comprehensive assessments, psychopharmacology, psychological testing, and dance, music, and art therapies. At the same time, subspeciality services are dedicated to adapting to the different challenges patients face, as well as providing culturally sensitive care to its diverse community. Subspecialties include a college mental health program, perinatal care, and care for the LGBTQ community, with plans to expand into providing a lifespan addiction services, as well as primary care services for psychiatric patients. Growth is essential in providing the care this community needs, and over recent years growth of the department has been exponential. 2025 alone sees over $25 million of funding for the department from philanthropy, insurance and government, allowing for two major new developments: a dedicated psychiatric ER (the only Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) in southern Brooklyn) and a new adolescent inpatient program – meeting the drive from New York’s governor to better serve the teenage population. With a diverse patient population, broad services, and high patient volumes, Maimonides Psychiatry is a great place to train, with a residents program that attracts trainees from all over the world, and combines training in clinical excellence with engagement in research. Innovation and training is key at all levels, with staff consistently working to improve the way patients are cared for – one example being training in better managing agitated patients. The team at Maimonides Psychiatry is defined by its passion and commitment to do right by its patient population – and continues to grow and innovate to do this better and better. Maimo.org
