Queensland Opposition Leader David Crisafulli says a “failure of epic proportions” by the Queensland government is responsible for the state’s social housing shortage. Data released in November for last year’s June to September quarter revealed over 43,000 Queenslanders were on the social housing waitlist in the state, according to the Queensland Council of Social Service – a rise of 1,600 since the quarter prior. Queensland Council of Social Service Chief Executive Aimee McVeigh said the state’s social housing register is ‘more like 100,000 households' requiring social housing, but they don’t apply because they can wait years. “We’re the only state in the nation over the last eight years where community housing’s gone backwards,” Mr Crisafulli said at a press conference on Saturday. “In that same period, many states have added many thousands of extra dwellings under that sector, and you can speak to the community housing sector about what things were like when Tim [Mander] was the minister. “Right now, the government is failing right across the board – people don’t believe they can own their own home, people are struggling to pay rent and find rentals and social housing is going backwards – that is a failure of epic proportions.”
