Former US Ambassador to UN calls for a hearing on UN Resolution 2758|Taiwan News

Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is in Taiwan for the first time. At a press conference over the weekend, the Republican from South Carolina expressed her support for Taiwan, and pointed out that "the threat of China" is one thing that both the Republican and Democratic parties agree on. She would like to see Taiwan join the UN, and called for a hearing on Resolution 2758, which the UN General Assembly passed in 1971. She said the Chinese Communist Party has, quote, "hijacked" the resolution to use it against Taiwan. Nikki Haley Former US ambassador to UN You want a leader that shows courage. And you want a leader that is determined to protect their people. I saw every bit of that in President Lai. Lauding President Lai Ching-te for his leadership qualities, the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley is in Taiwan for the first time. As she voiced her determination to support Taiwan, she also criticized China for intentionally misinterpreting Resolution 2758, which the UN General Assembly passed in 1971. Nikki Haley Former US ambassador to UN I think Taiwan deserves full status at the UN. But I think the least we should get is observer status. It is amazing to me that an organization like the UN, who prides itself on human rights, is willing to act like 24 million Taiwanese don’t even exist. It’s hypocritical. Haley also suggested that Taiwan and the U.S. should jointly request a hearing on Resolution 2758 so that the issue can be brought to the attention of the international community. As for the assertion that Taiwan should pay the U.S. for protection from China made by her former boss Donald Trump, Haley expressed a different view. Nikki Haley Former US ambassador to UN It is not about asking Taiwan to pay for their defense. Taiwan has placed multiple orders for military equipment. The impressive side of it was that you don’t hear the Taiwanese complaining. They’re not pretending to be victims. They’re acting every single day making sure that their military is doing simulations to be ready and making sure that their citizens are also ready. The 52-year-old South Carolinian has, in fact, spoken up for Taiwan on many occasions while in the U.N. during the Trump administration. When she was elected governor of South Carolina, Haley was the youngest governor at the time. In February last year, she threw her hat into the ring to announce her presidential bid, becoming the first candidate to challenge Donald Trump. In March, however, she withdrew from the GOP presidential primary. During her visit to Taiwan this time, Haley also met with President Lai and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, as well as with National Security Council Secretary General Joseph Wu. She said that no matter what the outcome of the yearend U.S. presidential election is, supporting Taiwan and facing up to the threats from China are already a rare bipartisan consensus.
