Pay attention to the woman lying motionless on the bathroom floor. Her name is Vanessa Ortega. She is twenty-six years old, a nursing student at Columbus State, three months from graduation. This morning, she told her roommate she had a migraine and was going to lie down. That was at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9th, 2024. It is now 4:47 p.m. When her roommate, Christine Palmer, knocked on the locked bathroom door and got no response, she called 911. Paramedics arrived within eight minutes. They broke down the door and found Vanessa unconscious on the tile floor, her lips blue, her breathing shallow and irregular. Her phone sat on the counter beside the sink, screen dark. As medics worked to stabilize her, Christine tried calling Vanessa's phone to reach her emergency contacts. The phone on the counter didn't ring. But somewhere inside the walls of the apartment, a muffled ringtone started playing. This was not a migraine. It was an abduction in progress.
