This ambitious book reframes modern Russian history through the lives of women. From the radical reforms of the Bolshevik Revolution to Stalin’s purges, World War II, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the rise of Vladimir Putin, Ioffe traces how political ideology shaped — and reshaped — women’s roles across generations. Early Soviet leaders legalized abortion in 1920 and promised sweeping gender equality. But over time, motherhood became national duty, feminism became suspect, and “traditional values” became state ideology.
