Gene editing to treat rapid aging disease 🧬 Sam Berns was only three years old when he was diagnosed with progeria, a rare gene mutation that causes rapid aging in children and shortens life expectancy to an average age of 14. Sam was an activist who helped raise awareness about the disease. He died in 2014 aged 17. His diagnosis inspired his parents to found the Progeria Research Foundation (@progeriaresearch), which was able to identify the exact gene mutation causing progeria, while his TED Talk inspired Harvard researcher David Liu to apply gene editing techniques to treat this rare genetic disorder.🔬 His team’s experiment on mice gives hope that gene therapy could help children like Sam live longer, healthier lives.
