A slideshow of photos I took during my first visit to Lenadoon in Belfast City on Monday 30th December 2019. Lenadoon (Irish: Léana an Dúin) is a suburb of Belfast City. It is located in West Belfast and is bounded by Andefsonstown, Suffolk and Black Mountain. It is mainly a Nationalist area. St. Oliver Plunkett's Church in Lenadoon was built in 1971 and was extended and renovated in 1985. St. Oliver Plunkett's Parish was constituted in 1976 and is a Parish in the Diocese of Down and Connor. Most of the original residents in Lenadoon were rehoused from old overcrowded terraced houses close to Belfast City Centre. The Battle of Lenadoon was a series of gun fights over six days from the 9–14 July 1972 between the Provisional IRA and the British Army, having started on Thursday, 9 July 1972 in and around the Lenadoon Avenue area and spreading to other places in Belfast. Loyalist paramilitaries and the Official Irish Republican Army were involved in some of the incidents. 28 people killed in total in Belfast according to the CAIN: Sutton Index of Deaths. The violence ended a two-week truce between the forces of the British Government and the IRA. Lenadoon includes an eponymous public park which was redesigned in 2000. The flats in Lenadoon were demolished in 2016 and were replaced with new houses.
