Future medical professional Emily is currently studying at Barts & The London School of Medicine & Dentistry - Queen Mary University of London, where - aside from her demanding medical studies, and her strong interest in music - she is also a keen player of cricket! Occasionally our volunteer musicians agree to try something a little different by way of delivering live music directly to the hospital patients on the wards. Today Emily bravely took this step as we visited the Maternity and Gynaecology wards on the 8th floor. These spaces are not very kind acoustically, and the floor plans don't make it easy to present musical performances that are accessible to more than a handful of people at any one time. Nevertheless, thanks to Emily's empathetic personality and sympathetic choice of songs, the 'experiment' worked surprisingly well... The applause she received after each song was both spontaneous and warm. Apologies to Emily, who appears in this video clip to be singing in a doorway! However, due to patient confidentiality, in the video we avoided showing the patients in this public waiting area who were listening while they waited to be called for their appointments. Here is the list of songs that Emily sang today: i. "For good" - Stephen Schwartz (from the musical "Wicked") ii. "O mio babbino caro" - Giacomo Puccini - (from the Opera Gianni Schicchi) iii. "Somewhere over the rainbow" - Eva Cassidy's version based on "The Wizard of Oz" iv. "Think of me" - Andrew Lloyd Webber (from The Phantom of the Opera) - [recorded here] v. "Slipping through my fingers" - by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA Thank you Emily for coming back to sing for us again, and we look forward to hearing you both sing and play your cello in March when The Friends of RLH will celebrate our 300th music recital!
