Kiruna: Population 17.000 Number of international Airports: 1 Your local small town is jealous of that. Enjoy landing here with me. It is still winter on that February afternoon. Sun never actually stands at a high angle in the sky but eternal darkness of polar night already faded away some days ago. Unlike Tromso (see my other video), Kiruna is shielded from the ocean by the Norwegian mountain range. That makes days and nights extra cold but dry. Perfect to watch aurora. Originally Kiruna was my backup plan if bad weather would mess up my Tromso-aurora plans but during both of my nights in Kiruna I have seen aurora unmatched to anything you could imagine: bright, colorful and illuminating more than 3/4 of the sky. Like seriously go to Kiruna. Fill up some Thermos for coffee n aurora and go see that mine during the day. 100 % worth it, probably gonna do it again. Swedish people make this place even more enjoyable: I rarely met kinder people anywhere in the world. When checking in for my flight back, there was just one plane scheduled to take off on that evening. The terminal was working at max capacity so this airport is the anti-DXB. Cold and chill in operation and people count :) Although just a small town, Kiruna is of major importance for Swedens and Europe's heavy industry as it is home to the worlds deepest iron ore mine. That is the original reason for Kirunas existance. It is Swedens northernmost city. Founded roughly 130 years ago it supplied countless steel mills with vast amounts of iron ore and will continue to do so for several decades. The mine even expanded so much that parts of the city have to be relocated to avoid structural damages on the houses and roads.
