Karatsu was one of the inspirations for Hamada Shoji's work, and his interest in the pottery became amalgamated into what was understood as Mashiko style. In fact, the clays in Mashiko and Karatsu are not dissimilar, and the materials for such glazes as e-karatsu and Chosen Karatsu, as well as others can be found in many areas of Japan. It's always a treat when visiting Karatsu to visit Yoyokaku, the Ryokan/Inn of Nakazato Takeshi's friend from childhood. It's a beautiful place and garden, and features pottery by Nakazato in several galleries. Continuing on into town, we can see the historical Takatori Mansion, also with a stunning garden, views, and own No theater, as well as many panels painted initially in the Momoyama period. Nearby, there is a little French bakery, and by this tenth day of the tour, we're all delighted to have a some of their marvelous baked goods. We hop into taxi's next, to visit Ryuta gama, the kiln of Nakazato Takeshi and his family. It's set in the beautiful mountain landscape around Karatsu, and features an extensive workshop and little gallery with a mountain stream running through the facilities.
