Science for kids in London just passed 8th year of existence. During these years we have provided thousands of lessons, workshops, and science shows to hundreds of kids and parents. One of the most popular courses we provide is Physics of Music, where we are discussing nature of sound and waves in general and their characteristics and perception. At every lesson we are making some simple musical instrument to illustrate different concepts and scientific language in playful manner. A couple of years ago, we have made an instrument called EKTARA. Originally it came from ancient India, but in recent years it became popular with DIY enthusiasts, using different modern materials to make a diverse versions of original. We have successfully made our own sample, each student had to prepare and assemble it by themselves with some help from teacher. I don’t have any physical samples left, all went to kids homes, but I can show you a video example. It worked, so some time later I have decided to go a bit further and make it slightly bigger, using a metal bucket as resonator. It worked as well, and it became a popular piece of equipment during lessons and shows. But this summer I have had a group of older secondary school pupils that were eager to make a step even further. And we made a monster version of ektara using a 200 litres metal barrel and 2 meter long bamboo stems. I dare to say that it is biggest example of this instrument in the world, The height of it is 263cm. scienceforkidslondon.co.uk
