Blessed with the time-honored Zenith A386 style in a versatile 38mm case size, this is a heritage-inflected luxury watch that stands among the greatest chronographs in the industry. More than one of the best watches for men, this is a unisex watch option, and if a watch collector were to purchase just one watch to represent Zenith watchmaking, the Chronomaster Original would be that watch. Originally launched in 1969, the Zenith A386 with El Primero caliber 3019PHC became a celebrated entry in the history of the Zenith watch manufacture. The El Primero, while likely not the first automatic chronograph movement to reach consumer hands, was the first high-beat integrated automatic chronograph. And unlike its contemporary rivals from Seiko and Breitling/Heuer/Hamilton/Buren, the El Primero remains relevant and in production as of 2021. The design of the Zenith A386 lives in the 2021 Chronomaster Original. Its distinctive overlapping “tri-tone” chronograph registers are true to the 1969 vintage watch, and the 38mm stainless steel case hews closely to history. Zenith’s “Striking 10th” complication explains the 10-second timing scale on the outer ring of the dial. By extending ten chronograph-timed seconds through 360 degrees of dial space, Zenith enables easier reading of the El Primero’s one-tenth-of-a-second resolution. Super LumiNova allows ready reading of the Chronomaster at night. Inside the 50-meter water resistant case, Zenith employs its latest El Primero caliber 3600. Effectively an “El Primero II,” this movement launched during the fiftieth anniversary of the movement in 2019. Improvements over the original El Primero chronograph include a 60-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, and the striking 10th complication as standard equipment.
