This video shows a bad quality old VHS tape recording (NTSC), one part captured "directly" from a VCR. The second part shows the same recording but with added "TBC" ( Time Base Correction ) . The signal is passed through the TBC-unit and thereby stabilized. TBC is especially useful for old tape recordings, second "generation" recordings ( recordings that has been copied from another tape) and tapes recorded on low quality VCR. TBC removes errors like "tearing", "flagging" (the upper part is waving like a flag", jitter ( especially seen on vertikal edges ). What is a TBC? Videotape recorders stores video on magnetic tape as a series of magnetic stripes. Minute instability of tape travel speed and head drum rotation cause jitter, when things that should happen with strict periodicity, do not. The basic function of a digital TBC is to read incoming video line by line, digitize it, and store in a memory buffer. It writes out the buffered lines with precise intervals between them. Visually, this achieves a perfectly rectangular picture with straight edges. Read more here / what-is-a-time-base-corrector
