Researchers Engineered A New COVID-19 Variant | The SARS-CoV-2 Chimera & Research Ethics

COVID-19 had a significant impact on the lives of many, and society is gradually moving past the pandemic. With the recent word that Boston University researchers conducted possible “gain of function” research and created a “dangerous” variant of SARS-CoV-2 with an 80% kill rate in mice, news and social media were quick to jump in onto the story, spreading concern to the public. This video will aim to go beyond sensationalized news headlines and break down the study in question. We will try to shed light on the multiple perspectives on the matter, perspectives on different sides of the topic and why this study may or may not be problematic. Finally, we seek to use this case as an opportunity to highlight the importance of ethics, safety, and communication in research.
