Ep. 107 GROUTING THE ART PLACE MOSAIC, Finishing the mosaic dog portrait & grouting, & a sunflower! Starting at The Art Place, I begin grouting the commemorative community mosaic with Delorean Gray sanded grout and a new rubber float. While the grout is slaking, I hand grind any sharp edges. The spreads easily except around the flat backed glass gems stick up. I decide to add a skim coat of gray grout to cover the white skim coat of thinset on the edges. Like sticks to like, so the cement to cement should stay put. Next I take a paper towel and remove excess grout from around the gems. Lots of wiping and buffing ensues. One piece was knocked out, so I do a quick repair job using E6000. Then more wiping and buffing. Using the back end of a metal spatula, I scrape off excess Weldbond that has dried on the surface of the glass. I proceed with wiping and buffing until it is all shiny and clean! I leave it propped up so the grout on the edges can set up for a few days. Then it is back to my studio and little Millie! I work on her curly fur in the ears and on her body with dark gray highlights and black filling in behind. Once the body is finished, I select some grass and background glass in greens and add a few blades in front of her furry feet. Then I complete her legs, feet and tail. Last of all, I knock out the rest of the mosaic grass and background. Next, I make a quick trip to The Art Place to see the commemorative mosaic installed! They used a long french cleat so it can be moved if needed. BONUS: I show the finished geometric class sample project! I grouted with black grout and I used extra spacing around some of the elements to create a grout river and make them pop! Then I grout Millie using the same soft black grout. I spread it with a blue finishing rubber used for ceramics. It is also great for removing the grout initially. Next, I wipe excess grout off with a paper towel. After waiting a bit for the grout to haze over, I wipe the mosaic with a cotton rag. There are some differences in the thickness of the glass, and I find a grout brush is needed to remove grout from the lower pieces. Lastly, I fine tune it with a pick. I finish it up by painted the edges with acrylic paint. Finally I get to work on another pendant! Of course, I choose to make another sunflower, this time using tiny dark millefiori for the center of the flower. I used some 24K gold smalti, plus some yellows in smalti and glass noodles. The stem is made from glass noodles and the leaves and sky are from hand-pulled filati. I love it!!!
