Day 2: The medical reasons we use pitocin AND the risks you need to know about. PITOCIN RISKS (addressing this upfront): ⚠️ Can cause stronger, more frequent contractions ⚠️ Strong contractions can stress baby ⚠️ Can cause tachysystole (too-frequent contractions) ⚠️ Rare: uterine rupture (higher risk with uterine scar) This is exactly why we: • Monitor continuously when using pitocin • Start with very low doses • Increase slowly and carefully • Can adjust or stop at any time • Have risk-vs-benefit conversations WHY USE SOMETHING WITH RISKS? Because sometimes the alternative also has risks. 3 MAIN USES: 1. INDUCTION (starting labor): • Past due date with aging placenta • Water broke without labor (infection risk) • Health conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes) • Concerns about baby’s well-being 1. AUGMENTATION (helping stalled labor): • Contractions that fade or stop • Prolonged stalled labor increases risks 1. POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE: • Helps uterus contract to control bleeding • Critical use after delivery KEY POINT: Every option has risks. Your job isn’t to avoid all risk (impossible). It’s to understand YOUR specific options and make informed decisions with your provider. TOMORROW: How pitocin works in the body and why monitoring is essential. Questions about risks or benefits?
