On February 12, Bangladeshis will go to the polls for the first time since Sheikh Hasina's government was ousted a year and a half ago. Hasina was ousted by a student-led movement which has formed a party called the Jatiya Nagarik Party (JNP), also known as the National Citizen Party (NCP). NCP leader, Nahid Islam, speaks about the challenges the party faces in forming political alliances and gaining support. Islam says the upcoming election is incredibly consequential: "this is no ordinary vote. It is not just about changing the government, but changing the country itself." NCP has formed a political alliance with the patriarchal Jamaat-e-Islami party, which has faced some backlash, especially due to its reputation concerning women's rights. The NCP's support is concentrated around the capital Dhaka, and faces challenges in broadening its support base. A majority of 128 million Bangladesh voters are Gen-Z.
