Demonstrators inside trucks STORYLINE: Protestors clashed with police in Berlin on Saturday evening in a violent riot which ended a day of peaceful Mayday marches in the German capital. Demonstrators threw molotov cocktails and other explosive devices at riot police who responded by chasing and arresting several people. May Day protests in Berlin, separate from the traditional labour rallies, have been marked by violence every year since 1987. Early on Saturday morning, 58 police officers were slightly injured when they clashed with protestors after overnight rioting and 111 people were taken into custody. On Saturday afternoon, in their annual march against May Day, some 2,300 supporters of the far-right National Democratic Party were confronted by about 300 stone-throwing counter-demonstrators who blocked their way. Police forced the counter-demonstrators out of the way, and arrested several of those who had been throwing stones. Protestors later set fire to rubbish in the street and a car that had been overturned, which police put out with their water cannons. Many of the counter-demonstrators joined the later march through Berlin, shouting that they had sent the "Nazis packing."
