House of Paidia | House of Play October 1, 2023 I am a fiber artist and sculptor. I create needle felted dolls and animals out of 100% wool fiber. For more information on my art studio and work process, visit me at: www.houseofpaidia.com Description: I like to hand dye my own wool fiber from time to time. In this video, I show how I prepare a potassium alum mordant. Mordants are used to help bind natural dye to fiber. While some natural dyes do not require mordants (such as black walnut due to its high tannin content), I like to use mordants when I am putting my fiber through multiple, different dye baths. Recipe: 3 Tablespoons Potassium Alum 1 Tablespoon Cream of Tartar Wool fiber should be scoured with a mild, neutral detergent beforehand. I like to use either Orvus Paste or a mild fiber scour that I purchased from Carol Leigh's Hillcreek Fiber Studio. I use a tsp of scour and soak my wool fiber to approximately 20 minutes (in warm water) to help dissolve any residual oils and dirt. I carefully rinse my scoured fiber so as not to accidentally felt it. I rinse the fiber in warm water before adding it to the mordant vat. To prepare the mordant, combine ingredients with water in a large stock pot and bring a low simmer until all powder is dissolved. Stir. Next, add wool fiber (wet). Maintain low simmer for 1 hour while mordanting fibers. After an hour, I allow the bath to cool down enough for me to remove the fibers without burning myself. I carefully rinse the mordanted fiber in warm water (same temp as bath so as not to accidentally felt the fibers). I can reuse the mordant bath for multiple batches of fiber. Alum is a very common, non-toxic mordant and Cream of Tartar helps the fiber maintain softness. NOTE: Maintaining similar water temperatures throughout the entire process keeps wool fiber from becoming felted. Supplies: MC-1 Core Wool from Living Felt.
