1988 was the N&W 1218’s second excursion season. It pretty much had a full calendar that year, too. Here is the footage I shot from 2 of the excursions trips that went through Northern Indiana during that year. June 18, 1988 - Chicago NRHS excursion to Fort Wayne’s Germanfest - trip # 1 of 2 via the ex-NKP. It was a really hot day and got up to 90º F in the afternoon. My dad and I were able to chase the train from Valpo to Fort Wayne. They dropped the passengers off in downtown Fort Wayne and then wyed the train via NE - Hugo - Junction - Runnion. It was a sight to see. Unfortunately the camcorder locked up in Fort Wayne and we actually ended up having to send it off to get repaired. I’ve included some slides my dad took with his Minolta Maxxum 7000 and a few from my own Kodak Retina camera. We followed the train back west and caught him at Claypool before calling it a day. 00:00 Valparaiso, IN. Along Nickel Plate Ave. The small grade crossing you see nearby with the “Bicycle Doctor” sign on the ground was later closed. 01:48 Knox, IN. As the mighty Class A rolls by here, I had bumped the tripod in an attempt to cover my ears. The 1218 had the loudest whistle I have ever heard and you could literally feel the sound waves vibrating against your chest! 03:29 New Haven, IN - NS 2822 hooks up to the rear of the train to start the wye process. On the reverse move, they actually cut the 1218 off of the train at East Wayne for servicing before the entire train was turned around. 07:07 Slide show July 9 & 10, 1988 - Bluewater NRHS excursions from Detroit to Fort Wayne and back using the ex-Wabash. 08:46 St. Joe, IN - CSX/NS diamond - July 9, 1988 - N&W 1218 runs west at track speed. The Milwaukee Road Super Dome was a real treat to see on this train. You can see the Bluewater NRHS sign hanging on the back of the train, as well as one of their own cars 7th from the rear. 10:29 Butler, IN - CR/NS diamond - July 10, 1988 - Westbound 12:14 Claypool, IN (Audio Recording) - June 18, 1988. Some really good echoing effects as the train approaches. All video was shot with a Sony BMC-110 BetaMovie camcorder. Audio at the end was recorded with a Panasonic RQ-J36 cassette recorder. Screen recording is of the Audacity program. "Folk Tap Harp" music by Unicorn Heads. Thanks for watching! ~Zeke
