Food & Culture Tour in Ise, the Spiritual Heart of Japan! (Traditional Street Food, Gourmet &...)

Okage-yokocho is the bustling, central part of the Oharaimachi hospitality district adjacent to the inner shrine of Ise Jingu (伊勢神宮), the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan. For thousands of years travelers have come here from across Japan on pilgrimage. This tradition continues to the present day, although the reasons for visiting have undergone a secular shift, and most "pilgrims" these days come here because of the region's cultural and historical significance -- and also because it's one of the best places in Japan to wander, soak up the traditional atmosphere and enjoy shopping, sightseeing, street food and other refreshments. In recent years the area is starting to receive attention from international tourists as well, and so in response, a local company based here in Okage-yokocho has decided to introduce an English-language food and culture tour. And (drumroll...) I'm proud to say I was lucky enough to be included in the first ever of these tours as a monitor and advisor. So in this video, I'm excited to share that experience with all of you. And by the way, all foods offered on the tour were vegetarian -- or at least vegetarian options were available in every case.
