*You do NOT need to spray fixative on your drawing beforehand, but can if you like! I never do. I often use this method to seal charcoal drawings on paper, cardboard, matboard, posterboard, and other surfaces prior to using in mixed media work. IT WILL DARKEN THE VALUES SOME, especially the highlights. Matte will darken the values LESS than gloss. In this video I am using matte Mod Podge. Examples of charcoal drawings sealed with Mod Podge before oil paint: This drawing now with oil paint glazes being added (still in progress) - Oil Paint Over Charcoal Drawing WIP • Update - Oil Paint Over Charcoal Drawing WIP Another one - Just a doodle - Charcoal + Oil Paint • Just a doodle - Charcoal + Oil Paint Suggested Supplies: Charcoal drawing Paper towels Small pieces of card stock or other thick paper (watercolor, posterboard scraps, etc.) Flat paint brush if desired (I usually use card stock instead of a brush since there is less of a chance for the charcoal to smear) Mod Podge or other varnish (I have successfully sealed charcoal with other varnishes, but Mod Podge is more economical to use in my art classes. If using another varnish than Mod Podge please do a test on charcoal before using it on your drawing.) Matte and gloss both work. My personal favorite is to use matte which ends up more of a satin sheen when dried. Paint palette or surface to place Mod Podge or varnish on Sand paper, fine grit, if needed TIP!!! - If your paper curls too much when completely dried you can paint the back side and it will help it flatten out.
