Tonight, my usual elegant rattan cane was set aside in favor of 'The Hornet,' a rather brutish wooden paddle assigned for bedtime corrections. I confess, my initial disdain for this crude implement was profound. Its pockmarked surface and blunt force felt entirely at odds with the precision and artistry I bring to my musical endeavors. Yet, as the evening unfolded, and the rhythm of 'The Hornet' began to assert itself, I found myself contemplating the unexpected logic and raw honesty of this 'percussive instrument.' It's a far cry from a Debussy score, but it certainly makes its point. This video offers a glimpse into the peculiar traditions and strictures of academy life, seen through the eyes of a conductor who prefers arpeggios to *thwacks*. It’s a story about finding balance in the most unbalanced situations, and perhaps, a grudging respect for tools that are effective, if not entirely aesthetic.
