Te Araroa Trail Thru Hike February 15th, 2023 Day 99, 42.1 Miles THE END! The Final Push. One last day to empty the tanks, leave it all out there, get after it, step true, step proper. From the Whimsical Studio it was 42.1 miles to the end, all that stood between us and “real people” clothes, endless food, as many good doggo pets as we could possibly want. Let’s go get it. The morning began at 7:30am~ and the goal was to make it by sunset around 9pm…go, go, go! The first chunk of the day was gorgeous beach walk that let our minds wander to the North Island beginning and the fullness of a circle which is called life. Getting to the end of the beach around 12:30~ a quick lunch was in order then back to stepping true. Bike path, road miles, and sunshine was the flavor of many a mile up to the turn off into Invercargill and the marsh walk. Gravel path would lead the way as the terminus brought us forward of with its gravitational pull. Gravel back to road and before we knew it we were in the final single digits of miles! The long and flat miles of today gave nothing but time to process this journey, but honestly, the processing has begun a week ago, this was just the “victory lap.” Connecting into the last bit of single track around Bluff Mt, the skies bathed the world in golden light and we truly felt blessed to be so lucky with our timing, our journey, our life. One last up to the top of Bluff and the excitement levels rose as the descent brought us into the last mile. Half jog, half hike brought us within sight of the sign and the grins on our faces couldn’t have been wider. 8:56PM, 42.1 Miles Done, our footsteps connected through the looney tunes living that is called the TA. Trying to jump to touch the sign after a hard push made us realize gravity was not our friend, and we laughed freely as only those with a “burden” lifted can. A “burden” of wet, of mud, of long alternates, of rivers, of mountains, of rain, of internal demons, of rocks, of roots, of roads, of cows, of sheep, of pain, and of joy. A “burden” that through the transformational process of a thru-hike became a journey, a life, a laugh, a love, a joy, a beginning and a end. What do we feel? Everything and nothing rolled into a universe within us. “Love is action, not feeling.” Go out and show love, be love, live your love.
