HOW TO GROW ALSTROEMERIA FROM SEEDS - PART 2

This is part 2 of How to grow Alstroemeria from seeds. I previously put the seeds through a 3 week period of cold stratification in the fridge. If you want to watch that video, here is a link to it: In this video, i am sowing two varieties of Alstroemeria, one is called 'Dandy Candy' and the other is 'Devotion' Before sowing your seeds, make sure that you sterilize the containers that you are going to put your seeds into. You will want to eliminate as many pests, pathogens, harmful bacterias and fungi as possible to give you the best chance of success. I have also used a sterilized seed starting growing medium . I premoistened the seeds starting mix with a little water. just a little, not too much.Sow the seeds at the same depth as the seeds are thick. After planting the seeds, i placed the containers into a large clear plastic bag to keep the humidity in. Finally, place your containers on top of a heat source such as a seedling heating mat, and make sure to have a plant grow light above the containers- a window does not have enough light for the emerging seedlings. Alstroemeria is also commonly known as the Peruvian lily. You can sometimes find them for sale in bunches in some grocery stores such as Trader Joes. But more often, you will find them in bouquets and arrangements from florists. They are very popular with florists as they are such a long lasting flower and they come in a wide range of colors. Even though they tend to be an expensive cut flower to buy, they are actually a very easy plant to grow if you want to give it a try. They are a half hardy perennial from South America. If you live in the Northern hemisphere, or anywhere where you get freezing temperatures in the winter, just dig them up and store over winter inside. They can be planted out again in the spring.
