(25 Apr 2020) In Argentina's capital, a prison riot broke out on Friday as inmates protested for more hygenic conditions and other measures amidst the spread of the new coronavirus.    Riots erupted as inmates protested at the Villa Devoto prison in Buenos Aires, with some inmates climbing onto the roof of the prison, armed with handmade knifes and spears. Prison's officials have tried to establish a channel of dialogue with them. Anxious relatives could be seen outside the prison, some saying the crowded conditions inside and the limitations placed on families outside exacerbated the risks inherent to the pandemic. Protests in Argentine prisons have increased in recent weeks. More than a thousand inmates from eight penitentiary units in the province of Buenos Aires are on a hunger strike demanding the option to be put under house arrest. Days ago, the highest criminal court recommended to lower courts alternative measures to confinement for those convicted of minor crimes. For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks. But it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death for some people, especially older adults and people with existing health problems.
