The 1969 classic, "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" is great for practicing the voiced, continuant, nasal /N/ sound and the voiceless /h/ sound. The second half of the song consists of the phrase "na na na na, na na na na, hey, hey, hey goodbye" repeated over 12 times. The /n/ sound is made by pressing the tip of the tongue against the bony aveolar gum ridge, located behind and and above your two front teeth. The /n/ sound is a voiced, nasal, continuant sound -- meaning your vocal chords vibrate, air passes through your nose, and it is possible to hold this sound for a long time. The /ɑ/ as in OLIVE vowel sound is the vowel sound in HOT and in the first syllable of FATHER. To make this sound, drop your jaw as if you are yawning. The lips do NOT round. The tongue is relaxed on the floor of the mouth. Listen and sing along with this line to practice not only the /n/ and OLIVE sounds in "Na Na" but also the following color vowel sounds: /eɪ/ as in GRAY vowel sound: Hey Hey /ɪ/ as in SILVER vowel sound: Kiss him /ʊ/ as in WOOD & /ai/ as in WHITE vowel sounds: Good bye For more information on using colors to represent vowel sounds watch • The Color Vowel® Chart - A Teaching and Le...
