Anatomy of Palmar Metacarpal Arteries The palmar metacarpal arteries are small arteries in the hand that contribute to the blood supply of the palmar aspect of the hand, specifically the metacarpal regions. These arteries are branches of the deep palmar arch, which is formed mainly by the radial artery with a contribution from the ulnar artery. Structure and Course Origin: The palmar metacarpal arteries arise from the deep palmar arch. Typically, there are three to four palmar metacarpal arteries. Course: These arteries run distally along the metacarpal bones, on the palmar surface, between the metacarpal bones and the corresponding lumbrical muscles. They travel in the second, third, and fourth intermetacarpal spaces. Branches: As they run towards the fingers, the palmar metacarpal arteries give off smaller branches that supply the surrounding muscles and bones. Anastomosis: The palmar metacarpal arteries anastomose (connect) with the common palmar digital arteries, which are branches of the superficial palmar arch, near the bases of the fingers. This anastomosis forms part of the complex network of vessels supplying the fingers. Supplied Structures The palmar metacarpal arteries supply blood to: The metacarpal bones. The interosseous muscles (muscles located between the metacarpal bones). The lumbrical muscles. The skin and soft tissues overlying the palmar surfaces of the metacarpal regions. Clinical Significance Hand Injuries: Damage to the palmar metacarpal arteries can occur in hand injuries, leading to compromised blood supply to the affected areas. Reconstructive Surgery: Understanding the anatomy of these arteries is crucial for hand surgeons performing reconstructive procedures, including replantation and flap surgeries. #metacarpal
