Kißlegg is located in the Allgäu region of southern Germany. The whole region is noted for outdoor activities and just outside of the centre of Kißleg to the west, there is a 26 hectare nature reserve around the Zellersee lake. Other nearby nature reserves protect the moors and lakes of the Arrisrieder Moos, the Gründlenried-Rötseemoos and the area around Brunnen and the Sigrazhofer Ried. I parked my motorhome in what is called the Schloss Car Park which is next to the large park. There was probably a settlement here in the Roman era. In the 8th century, a priest from Leutkirch founded a dwelling on the shores of Lake Zell, which was first mentioned as Ratpotiscella in 824 and by the beginning of the 9th century this had developed into a village. Around 850 this came into the possession of the monastery of St. Gallen, which was built between the Zellersee and Obersee. An aristocratic family built the castle in the twelfth century. On 28 February 1394 King Wenceslas in Prague conferred market rights. During the German Peasants' War Kißlegg was in one of the centres of rebellion. In 1548, Kißlegg was completely destroyed, with the exception of the Schellenberg castle. In 1704, a fire destroyed almost the entire market area. In 1806 Kißlegg was annexed to the Kingdom of Württemberg.
