The site was established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, which was a top-secret government program to develop atomic weapons during World War II. The Hanford Site was home to a number of nuclear reactors, including the B Reactor, which produced the plutonium used in the first atomic bomb tested at Alamogordo, New Mexico, and in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945. After the war, the site continued to produce plutonium for the US nuclear weapons arsenal throughout the Cold War. However, the production of nuclear materials also generated a significant amount of radioactive waste, which was stored on site. In 1989, the US Department of Energy (DOE) began the process of cleaning up the Hanford Site, which had become one of the most contaminated nuclear sites in the world. The cleanup is a complex and ongoing process that involves treating and disposing of radioactive waste, demolishing contaminated buildings and structures, and remediating contaminated soil and groundwater.
