The site was established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, which was a top-secret government program to develop atomic weapons during World War II. The Hanford Site was home to a number of nuclear reactors, including the B Reactor, which produced the plutonium used in the first atomic bomb tested at Alamogordo, New Mexico, and in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945.
