Beginner watercolor artists often focus on matching exact colors they see in a photo or real life, to the closest shade from their paint set, then apply that color to each part of the painting. The problem? This approach rarely leads to paintings with strong tonal balance, clear contrast, and defined focal areas—because it’s the wrong thing to focus on. Instead, the key is color cohesion—using colors that share a consistent temperature, brightness, and saturation, as well as high contrast–having distinct light, mid and dark tones to create clear focal area. The best way to achieve these two things is by working with just the primary colors, mixed in different ratios to paint the entire scene. And as you paint the scene, pay more attention to the darkness of the color, and whether an area is warm vs. cool, instead of worrying about having the colors match exactly what you see in the photo. In this beginner-friendly color mixing class, I’ll show you a foolproof method for using primary colors to build a strong foundation for your painting—preserving necessary contrast and tonal clarity (light, mid, dark values). From there, you’ll learn how to use bright colors as modifiers to adjust temperature and vibrancy in specific areas, without losing sight of your focal point or values. -- 👉 Two more resources on color mixing as mentioned in video: 🌈Color mixing charts and tutorials https://www.inaxiwatercolor.com/pages... 🌈Full-length painting video demonstrating how to do a value study and turn it into color using this color method. / full-length-demo-135257372 --- 👉More about me: Ina Xi is an award-winning painter and art educator based in the Pacific Northwest, whose work explores the themes of nostalgia, cultural diversity and collective human experiences.
