The first session of the training, Introduction to Environmental Investigations, led by Janet Heard, introduced participants to the global landscape of environmental contamination and toxic exports, with a strong focus on how environmental harm is often shifted from Europe to the Global South through supply chains. The session explored key investigative themes including EU-banned pesticides, industrial pollution, toxic waste trafficking, and dirty fuel exports, highlighting the public health, environmental, and accountability implications of these practices. Participants were guided through the core investigative questions journalists should ask when reporting on environmental harm, the importance of cross-border collaboration, and the role of data, open-source tools, and public databases in uncovering hidden environmental abuses. The session also drew on real-world case studies from Africa and Europe to demonstrate how sustained investigative reporting can lead to public awareness, accountability, and policy pressure
