Neurobiology: Complex Opioid Overdose and the Brain

This course, presented by Dr. Chrystal Fullen, will delve into the intricate relationship between traumatic brain injury (TBI), opioid use disorder (OUD), and opioid overdose. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of action of opioids, the neurological impacts of overdose, and the role of hypoxia in brain injury. The course will also explore the concepts of neuroplasticity and addiction, as well as review neuropathological findings in opioid overdose cases. Finally, participants will learn about strategies for prevention and recovery, including the use of Narcan. This is the 2nd installment of a 4 part Webinar Series: Opioids, Overdose, and Brain Injury This webinar series will examine opioids, overdose, and brain injury and enhance the capability of Maine brain injury, substance use, and behavioral health (BH) treatment providers to serve persons with co-occurring brain injury and substance use disorder (SUD). Topics include opioid misuse and treatment, how opioid overdose affects the brain, the use of Narcan, and state and community resources available.
