Joe Bund von Hotel Adlon, Berlin mit seinem Tanz-Orchester und Chor – Das ist Berlin! Marschlied/Foxtrot aus dem Tobis-Film "Es leuchten die Sterne” [The Stars Are Shining], Gloria 1938 (Germany) NOTE: A German A-class revue-film "Es leuchten die Sterne” (The Stars Are Shining; 1938) was a remake of the early sound film of 1930, now designed by the Goebbels propaganda machinery as the super-production, to prove to the world, the film-culture in the Nazi-Germany obscures the fame of Hollywood and becomes the leader in the world. The performers were about three dozen celebrities of the Third Reich film and entertainment – a glamorous collection the world would never see again: dancer La Jana – prepared to her dancing film-role by the Polish dance master Anthony Nelle, formerly partner of Anna Pavlova, singer Rosita Serrano (in Germany known as "the Chilean nightingale", who made her film debut here) and Austrian hearthrob and crooner Willi Forst, as well as the brightest stars of UFA/Tobis film syndicate: Lil Dagover, Käthe Dorsch, Gustav Fröhlich, Henry George, Hilde Hildebrandt, Paul Hörbiger, Harry Liedtke, Theo Lingen, Albert Schönhals, Hans Moser, Anny Ondra, Harald Paulsen, Hans Söhnker, Olga Chekhova, Grethe Weiser or Ida Wüst. The huge dance scenes, presented by the famous soloists accompanied by the Hiller Ballet, were supposed to outshine the lavish choreography of American productions with such dancing stars as Elanor Powell or Ruby Keeler. A special appearance in the movie had the London Dagenham Girl Pipers, an all-female bagpipe combo. The music was written by Leo Lux, with cooperation of German most successful hit-writing duet: Michael Jary & Bruno Balz. The film story is based on the “film in the film” structure: Mathilde, a stenographer wants to be an actress, so she gives up her job and saying goodbye to her boyfriend goes to Berlin, where she hopes to be "discovered". Once in the film studio, she stands in front of the manager and demands at once to get a role. Ofcourse, she is ridiculed and offered the only job she is qualified to do - as an extra. Yet one day, the leading star makes a scene to the director and Mathilde is suddenly given a life chance to take over her role. After an array of intrigues and fights between actors – when the backstage life of the film artists is shown with humour and music – Mathilda finally finds her love by the side of a simple and honest man – a gaffer in the studio - and she decides, that starting a happy family is more worthy than any film career (The idea, which is absolutely true, yet in that special time in German history, it was more than consistent with the “Aryan breeding program”: one of topics of the Nazi propaganda). Film was premiered on the 17th March, 1938 in Berlin Capitol. A huge commercial success in Germany was soon followed by the not less successful release of the film in many other countries, for example, on 20 May 1938 in the US. Joe BUND was brother of Hans Bund – they were two Swing musicians in the Third Reich. Joe Bund led the renowned dance band in one of the most prestigeous venues in Berlin - Hotel Adlon, located by Unter den Linden near the Brandenburger Tor.
