Each year I spend my November and December asking for support from friends, family, co-workers, colleagues, my current and former students, parents of Frost Valley campers, and former campers themselves—to help me raise funds to provide financial aid for families who cannot otherwise send their children to camp. Yes, based on our idea that every kid deserves two weeks at camp—in our gorgeous mountain valley, under pristine starry night skies, across huge fields for playing and along trails for hiking—Frost Valley provides aid to families in need. My effort to raise money at the end of 2025 to support kids in the summer of 2026 feels as urgent than ever. I really don't know of a more effective non-profit organization. Frost Valley makes not a dime of profit. We have typically provided during summer some $900,000 to families and children in need. That aid creates socio-economic, regional, cultural, religious, and other kinds of diversity, and that diversity in turn forms a community in which the values of tolerance and caring and humane safety are real and present. Frost Valley has been hit by a hurricane, suffered major losses during the pandemic, but we have nevered budge from our commitment to help support families needing financial aid. My current personal goal is to raise funds that will enable FIFTY children between the ages of eight and fifteen to come to camp next summer! I need to raise this amount by the last day of the year 2025—December 31. I am hardly alone in feeling that an entire generation of kids will once again need our help in the summer of 2026. Many live anxiously through family crises of physical and mental health, of economic urgency, of community challenges at home. They are waiting for us once again to bring them something really, really, life-enhancingly good during a summertime away. It is my intention once again to spend my summer volunteering at Frost Valley—to support the kids, guide their counselors, and be on hand to help in whatever way I can to make summer 2026 as fun and exhiliarating a vacation for them as will be humanly possible. Please help me help the kids now so we can be ready for them then.
