🌱 Understanding Equity-Seeking™ Behaviors in PDA 🌱 When we observe behaviours in individuals with PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), they are often misinterpreted as deliberate defiance or avoidance. But let’s shift our perspective. These are not simply conscious strategies; they are driven by a deep, neurobiological response aimed at regaining a sense of balance and equity in their environment. Imagine a scenario where the power dynamic is tilted, such as conventional parenting or structured classroom settings. For a PDAer, even perceived imbalances trigger their nervous system, causing anxiety, fear, or panic. Their reactions, whether it's resisting simple requests or unexpectedly throwing objects, aren't planned rebellions. They are instinctive efforts to restore their equilibrium and feel safe again. A personal story I often share highlights this. When I finally asked for help in school, the relief was quickly followed by intense, unexplained anxiety. This inner conflict led to an impulsive action—throwing a water bottle—not out of choice but from an unrecognized need to recalibrate the environment to a place of equity. 💡 When we observe these behaviours, it's crucial to get curious rather than corrective and to try and understand that for a PDAer, there can be incredible anounts of shame involved here. We may not show this due to vulnerability also creating that shift in power dynamics. But, it’s about seeking that balance, that equity in a world that often feels overwhelming and out of control. Let’s shift from judgment to understanding. 🧡 #PDA #PathologicalDemandAvoidance #EquitySeeking #UnderstandingPDA #Neuroaffirming #TraumaInformed #ParentingPDA
