While Osaka's Nishinari Ward showed us authentic local Japanese life, Kobe tells a completely different story. As one of Japan's first ports to open during the Meiji Restoration, Kobe became a gateway for international trade and cultural exchange. Chinese merchants established Nankinmachi (Chinatown), Western traders built elegant settlements, and diverse communities transformed this port into one of Japan's most cosmopolitan cities. Join me as I explore the layers of history at Kobe's vibrant Chinatown, the scenic Meriken Park and Port area, the Former Foreign Settlement with its European architecture, and the hillside neighborhood of Kitanocho where foreign residences still stand. This is the story of how Kobe became the place where Japan opened its doors to the world.
