This is a reading of the mystic Meister Eckhart's S4. Can the Logos be born into the soul of a man from his senses, from that which comes from outside the man (i.e., images, sensory input)? No, the Logos cannot be born that way. The Logos must well up from within the ground of a man’s soul, out of God. For that to happen, man’s activities must cease and all of the powers of his soul must serve God’s ends rather than his own ends. God alone gives birth to the Logos in a man’s soul. Man’s own natural light cannot assist (no creaturely skill, knowledge or wisdom can enable a man to know God divinely). Instead, one must place oneself in darkness and unknowing – this is called “potential receptivity.” “[T]he more barren you are of self and unwitting of all things, the nearer you are” to God. This is desolate self-estrangement, absolute stillness. Once you have become dark, unknowing, self-estranged, empty and bare, then you are ready (potentially receptive); then God must act and God will pour himself into you. “He longs for you a thousand times more than you long for Him: the opening and entering are a single act.” This is true even if you cannot perceive him in you, for God cannot leave anything void and unfilled. How can you know that God is born in your soul? You shall be unhindered by anything. All creatures direct you to God and his birth in your soul. Things that were hindrances will now help you. “All things become simply God to you, for in all things you notice only God ....” “Nothing brings you closer to God … as the sweet bond of love.” He who has love, the least action or practice of such a man is more profitable and fruitful to himself and to others than all the works of others who are inferior to him in love. “His rest is more useful than another’s labor.” The more you are caught by the hook of love, the more you are free. ----- Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research.
