As the route approaches Saariselkä, the terrain becomes more elevated, and the surrounding landscape opens into wider views of the fells. After entering the resort area, the drive continues up Kaunispää via a steep, narrow access road that is often icy and requires cautious, low‑gear driving. The ascent leads above the tree line, where wind exposure increases and snowbanks can be high along the roadside. At the top, the road ends near the summit buildings and parking area, from which the short walk to the Kaunispää triangulation tower begins. The entire drive is straightforward in normal winter conditions but demands attention to weather, traction, and changing light, especially during the polar night.
