Marlborough Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around 10 miles south of Swindon, is the town of Marlborough. It is speculated that the area where the town stands today has been inhabited from as early as 2400 BC, according to radiocarbon dating at Marlborough Mound - a 19-metre-tall (60 ft) Neolithic monument within the grounds of Marlborough College. Following the Norman Conquest, a wooden castle was built on the site of Marlborough Mound. This was later rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century. In 1189 Prince John, who later became King John, married Isabella, Countess of Gloucester at Marlborough Castle. It served as a royal residence until around the late 13th century. It later fell into disrepair, and by 1403 it was reportedly in ruins. A new residence was built on the same site, which ended up in the hands of the Seymour family after Edward VI gifted it to his mother's relatives. In 1653 the Great Fire of Marlborough broke out. It started from a tanner's yard and spread quickly down the high street. Around 250 buildings were damaged or destroyed in the space of about three hours, including St Mary's Church, which was subsequently rebuilt in the Puritan style of Oliver Cromwell's era. The church appears in the walk just after the 14-minute mark. The other church featured in the walk is the now redundant St Peter's Church, which appears at the beginning. This dates from the 15th century, and was where Cardinal Wolsey was ordained in 1498. Wolsey would later become Lord Chancellor, Henry VIII's chief adviser, but would fail to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. The church is now a community centre. After the Great Fire, Marlborough's high street was widened in the rebuilding process. Some claim it to be the widest high street in England, however the real record holder is understood to be Stockton-on-Tees. Prior to the arrival of the railways, Marlborough had a thriving coaching inn industry. At its peak, just over 40 stagecoaches stopped in the town per day. In 1864 the first of two stations to have existed in the town opened. This became known as Marlborough High Level, and served as the terminus of a branch line connecting to Savernake. In 1881 a second station opened, which became known as Marlborough Low Level, and linked up to Swindon. By the 1960s, both stations had closed. Today, public transport to Marlborough consists of buses from Swindon, Hungerford and various other nearby towns and villages. In 1843 Marlborough College was founded. This is a public school for pupils aged 13 to 18. Among its famous alumni are Siegfried Sassoon, James Mason, Nick Drake, Kate Middleton and Jack Whitehall. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
